On August 20, following our Sunday service, an Immigration and Refugee Forum will be held at San Gabriel Episcopal Church. Representatives from El Centro de Igualdad y Derecho (the center for equal rights) and The Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice will explain their missions during a traditional Mexican lunch.
El Centro provides information on the US and NM laws for immigrants and refugees and contact with immigration lawyers. It assists with labor rights and problems and make referrals to community agencies that provide social and economic education and assistance. Under their auspice is Encuentro (The Meeting Place), the adult education component providing ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction and Citizenship prep.
The Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice, housed in Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, provides direct-assistance volunteers to weary sojourners from foreign lands. Limited emergency financial aid is available through this group, as well as friendly faces to promote easier passage into the American culture.
Please plan to share in our Immigration and Refugee forum following the service on Sunday, August 20, enjoying lunch, fellowship, and if you are interested, a chance to learn how you can help the lives of some of humanity’s lost wanderers.
Be sure to invite someone to church hear the speakers!
